Abstract: The collection contains documents and photographs related to Bishop Charles Francis Buddy and the Catholic church. The majority of the documents are sermons given by Bishop Buddy. Photographs are primarily of Bishop Buddy and signed photographs given to Bishop Buddy.

Biographical Note

Charles Francis Buddy (1887-1966) served as the first Bishop of San Diego from 1936 to 1966. He and Mother Rosalie Hill founded the San Diego College for Women and the University of San Diego College for Men, which later became the University of San Diego.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains documents and photographs related to Bishop Buddy and the Catholic church. The majority of the documents are handwritten and typed sermons given by Bishop Buddy. Many of the typed sermons include Bishop Buddy's handwritten edits. These are sermons given at Christmas and Easter masses, as well as a sermon on Christianity and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Also included are a few newspaper articles about Bishop Buddy and the installation of Bishop Leo T. Maher.
Photographs in this collection include portraits of Bishop Buddy, photographs of Bishop Buddy with others, and signed photographs and prints given to Bishop Buddy.
Additional photographs and documents not directly related to Bishop Buddy are included.

Scope and Content Note

Written in pencil on the front corner is "Alex Holmes Eureka." Names written on the back are: John Gray 1852, Eugenie Gray 1862, Stella Fougner 1880, Elsi, George, Florence, Loyd, Gladys, Laurence Fougner. According to the 1900 census, John (born 1852 in Maine) and Eugenie Gray lived in San Diego. In the 1910 census, they lived in Eureka.

Physical Description: Black and white framed photograph. 8.5 x 11.5 cm

Scope and Content Note

Written on the back: "This was taken the last week in May 1953. A buddy of mine snapped it when I was not looking. Love, Jackie. See Mt. Fuji." This is possibly related to Camp Fuji which was turned over to the Marine Corps from the US Army in 1953. Image includes multiple white soldiers and one black soldier, all appearing to be resting. This is possibly an image of one of the first integrated United States military units as desegregation of the military did not begin until 1951.

Physical Description: Possibly a carbo photographic print. 28 x 35.5 cm

Scope and Content Note

O’Shea edited the Southern Cross newspaper from 1937 to 1970. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1924 and became a priest in the San Diego diocese in 1937. He died in April 1983.
