This collection is part of an outreach and collection-building partnership between the
June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives, the
UCLA Center for the Study of Women (CSW) and the
UCLA Library. These collections expand the pool of primary source materials available to researchers and to the community at large. This
partnership was initiated by CSW and is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to inventory, organize,
preserve, and digitize more than eighty Mazer collections pertaining to lesbian and feminist activism and writings.
Biography
Gianna Groves-Lord began her professional career in England in 1960 as a caterer. Upon coming to the United States through
employment with the South African Embassy, she found herself as the only "lady chef" in Embassy Row in Washington D.C. She
was hired away from the embassy by Harriet Deutsch and moved to California. Later, she gave up catering after severe back
problems and hospitalization, and turned to floristry. She began work with Pierre Kenards Custom Florist in 1975.
Scope and Content
The Gianna Groves-Lord papers largely consists of her personal records related to United States immigration and employment.
They also include financial documents, correspondence, hobbies, and papers on health. The collection also contains various
newspaper clippings and photographs.
