    Biographical / Historical

Republic Pictures was an American motion picture/television production and distribution company known for producing Westerns, serials, and B films. Its Westerns created stars like John Wayne, Gene Autry, Rex Allen, and Roy Rogers. Some of Republic Pictures bigger budget films include "The Quiet Man" (1952), "Sands of Iwo Jima" (1949), "Johnny Guitar" (1954), and "The Maverick Queen" (1956). Viacom now holds their library. The company emerged from a merger in 1935 between Mascot Pictures, Consolidated Film Industries, and Monogram Pictures. As television grew in popularity and "B" movies waned in popularity, Republic turned their studios into rental facilities for other production companies. In 1967, National Telefilm Associates (NTF), one of the largest independent film-to-television distributors, purchased the entire Republic Pictures motion picture library, and in 1985 NTA changed its name to Republic Pictures Corporation, focusing on the production, distribution, and syndication of television and films. In 1985, Republic also acquired Blackhawk Films, a film mail order company.
