Condition Description: Album
condition is good, with worn edges, some tears and rubbing. Pages, photographs and other
contents are fine, with brittle paper, light soiling and cellotape.

Collection Scope and Content Summary
A photo album created by Private York Panniell (ca. 1925-1987) while serving in Japan
during the U.S. Occupation between 1946 and 1947. Includes photographs of himself, his
fellow service members in the all-African American 933rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion,
Japanese soldiers and civilians and local scenery. Also includes Japanese postcards and
currency, as well as portraits of Japanese celebrities. The album also contains two uniform
patches, a list entitled "My favorite songs while I was in Japan," a love poem entitled "The
Vision" and a cloth painting of an unidentified woman (possibly a souvenir from
Yokohama).
