    Biography/Administrative History

Dean S. Gilliland (b. 1928 – d. 2013) taught in the Fuller Seminary School of World Mission from 1977 – 2011. His specializations included cross-cultural studies, contextualized theology, and African Studies. He earned his PhD at Hartford Seminary Foundation, and his articles have been published in journals such as “Missiology” and “Islamic Review”. Gilliland began his career as a bush missionary in Nigeria in 1956. His experience and ability in speaking the Hausa language caused him to become the teacher for local evangelists and pastors at the mission school. In 1969, Gilliland taught at the Theological College of Northern Nigeria, which taught seven missions and eight churches. In 1972, he became principal (president) of the college, serving until 1976.
