Description
This collection contains material associated with conscientious objectors who were part of the Civilian Public Service (CPS)
as well as in non-combatant roles during World War Two; and part of 1-W Service during the Korean War, as well as material
related to the Selective Service Act of 1967.Also included are materials generated by pacifist organizations that promoted
peace, and were against war and conscription.
Background
By definition from the Selective Service System "a conscientious objector is one who is opposed to serving in the armed forces
and/or bearing arms on the grounds of moral or religious principles". During World War Two and the Korean War, conscientious
objectors were assigned to non-combatant roles or as laborers in Civilian Public Service (CPS) camps in lieu of conscription
or military service.
Restrictions
All requests for permission to publish or quote from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the Director of Archives
and Special Collections. Permission for publication is given on behalf of Special Collections as the owner of the physical
materials and not intended to include or imply permission of the copyright holder, which must also be obtained.
