Abstract: The collection comprises 25 mounted albumen photographs taken throughout the Caribbean in the 1870s and 1880s. Locales represented include: Trinidad, Saint Vincent, Jamaica, Guadeloupe, Barbados, Saint Lucia, Martinique, Nevis, Saint Thomas, and Saint Kitts. Three photographs of Trinidad are signed Felix Morin in the negative.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection comprises 25 mounted albumen photographs taken throughout the Caribbean in the 1870s and 1880s. The collection comprises 25 mounted albumen photographs taken throughout the Caribbean in the 1870s and 1880s. Locales represented include: Trinidad (nine images; three are signed by Felix Morin); Saint Vincent (three images); Jamaica and Guadeloupe (two images each); and Barbados, Saint Lucia, Martinique, and Nevis (one image each). Saint Thomas and Saint Kitts are each represented by a two-part panorama; also present is a market scene taken in Saint Kitts. Images include harbor and city views, street scenes, an East Indian regiment, and views of a sugar mill. Several of the photographs of Trinidad depict groups of East Indian indentured laborers and studio portraits of young East Indian women.
Titles are from the English captions written on the recto of each mount by an unidentified nineteenth-century collector. Consequently, some titles may include language now considered to be racist or biased.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in a single series:Series I. Views of the Caribbean, 1870s-1880s.

Biographical / Historical

Three photographs are signed in the negative by Felix Morin, a French photographer who maintained a studio in Port of Spain, Trinidad from 1869 through the late 1890s. The remainder of the photographs are unattributed.
