    Biography/Administrative History

Born in New York, Augustus T. Arrowsmith came to San Francisco in March 1851. Amos P. Catlin organized the Natoma Mining Company in 1851 to bring water from the American River to the area now known as Folsom, hiring Arrowsmith initially for an engineering survey and later, as chief engineer for a dam and canal. Arrowsmith worked on both coasts after 1860, and after a long career in civil engineering, died in Orange, New Jersey in 1908. Dr. White was probably Kentucky-born Thomas Jefferson White, who was appointed Visiting Physician to the State Marine Hospital in San Francisco in 1853.
