This collection contains ten letters ranging from April to October 1864 written by Hiram Austin to his wife Susan Austin during
the American Civil War. Their home was in Fox Lake, Dodge Co., Wisconsin. Also included in a separate folder are biographical
materials relating to the Austin family, before and after Hiram.
The first letters refer to swearing in to the Army and meals/rations in St. Louis, Chicago, and the rest of the letters are
from Nashville. Mr. Austin mostly speaks cordially and talks about everyday life with little detail pertaining to the war.
He was discharged and returned home around mid-October, 1864.
