Acquisition Information

This collection given by Stewart M. Marshall to Stanford University in 1953.

Biographical / Historical

The papyri were obtained from a Chinese gentleman doing post graduate work in London. He furnished the following information: "This collection of Egyptian papyri was purchased from Dr. Selim Hassan, Professor of Egyptology at Fouad I University at Cairo, the author of the Excavations at Giza... According to Dr. Hassan, a large part of these fragments were unearthed at Giza and were dated about 200 years BC. They had been in his possession since they were discovered. Because of their antiquarian interest, they were acquired in October, 1946." The collection is organized by language. Some boxes contains fragments of fibers that were found on the papyrus and paper fragments.
