    Abstract: John Lofland served as Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Davis from 1970-1994. His papers contain research materials on demonstrations in or near the California State Capitol building in 1977 for his books, Symbolic Sit-ins: Protest Occupations at the California Capitol (1982) and Crowd Lobbying: An Emerging Tactic of Interest Group Influence in California (1982). Also included are materials relating to the formation of the sister city relationship between the City of Davis, California and the Ukrainian city of Uman.

    Biography

    John Franklin Lofland was born on March 4, 1936 in Milford, Delaware. He received his B.A. from Swarthmore College (1958), his M.A. in Sociology from Columbia University (1960), and his Ph.D in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley (1964). Lofland served as Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Davis from 1970-1994.

    Scope and Content

    The papers contain research materials on demonstrations in or near the California State Capitol building in 1977 for Lofland's books, Symbolic Sit-ins: Protest Occupations at the California Capitol (1982) and Crowd Lobbying: An Emerging Tactic of Interest Group Influence in California (1982). Also included are materials relating to the formation of the sister city relationship between the City of Davis, California and the Ukrainian city of Uman.
