    Biography

    Alfred L. West was born in Kansas City. He joined Southern Pacific in 1922 as a clerk in the Assistant Auditor's office. He advanced through many Accounting Department positions in San Francisco, California until he became the Assistant to General Auditor on Jan. 1, 1960 and the personnel officer in charge of administration of employee matters in August 1961.
    Mr. West passed away in 1993.

    Scope and Contents

    Includes photographs, railroad passes, identification cards, and a retirement menu for Southern Pacific Railorad employee Alfred L. West, who worked at SP headquarters in San Francisco, Calif. for 43 years.
    Photographs show Alfred West at of an employee baseball game, accounting department employees, a banquet, office snapshots and Alfred's retirement party. Of note is a ribbon celebrating West's 40 years of service in 1962 by Oto "Toot" Gaaga, which may be the motto of an SP Accounting Department social organization known as the "Conquistadores".
