Abstract: The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence between Frederick (Fred) Huth, a German-born merchant and banker residing
in London, and his business partners in various cities throughout Europe. The letters go back as far as 1828, with 1850 being
the latest date.

Frederick (Fred) Huth (1777-1864) was born Johann Friedrich Andreas Huth in the state of Niedersachsen in Northwestern Germany.
His father worked as a tailor. At age 14, Frederick Huth became an apprentice at a Spanish merchant house in Hamburg. Beginning
in 1797, he spent several years living in Spain and South America, and married his Spanish wife, Manuela Felipa Lorenza Mayfren,
in 1806. The couple had eleven children. In 1809, after moving to London, Huth established the company Frederick Huth and
Co., which at first functioned as an import and export business and later developed into a bank. Ten years later, Huth became
a British citizen. Beyond his role as a banker and merchant, he also worked for the Spanish queen and Spanish government.
Huth died in London in 1864.
The collection contains 58 letters addressed to Frederick Huth composed by his business partners in Hamburg, Leipzig, Cologne,
Königsberg (now Kaliningrad), Vienna, Santander, and Copenhagen spanning the years 1828 through 1850. The material reflects
Huth's activities as a banker and merchant, with the main concerns of these letters being stocks, bonds, and international
trade, especially in the British colonies. They testify to Huth's wide investment interests in various colonial products such
as Indigo from India and Jamaican coffee.
The collection also contains three stock tickets listing the values of government bonds and other equities in the years 1849
and 1850.
