Historical or Biographical Note

The General Steamship Corporation, Ltd. was organized in 1920. The company's first president was Harry S. Scott. Allan K. Hulme joined the operation in 1923 and later became vice president in charge of Charter, Sale and Purchase. General Steamship Corporation was primarily an owners' agent and broker with headquarters at 240 Battery Street, San Francisco, CA and offices in Seattle, WA; Portland, OR; and Los Angeles, CA and agencies in San Diego, CA; Vancouver, B.C.; Callao, Peru; and Valparaiso, Chile. Collection Scope and Content

The General Steamship Corporation, Ltd. charter party ledgers, 1923-1941 (SAFR 23818, HDC 1663) collection contains charter party agreements pasted into 6 large ledger books. The collection has been processed to the collection level and is open for use without restrictions.
The collection contains charter party agreements for cargoes such as lumber, grain, coal, steel, and gypsum. Some have correspondence attached to the agreements. Among the well represented clients were J.J. Moore & Co., Inc., Hammond Lumber Company, Continental Grain Company, Robert Dollar Company, Alberta Wheat Pool, and Strange & Co., Inc. Most agreements are stamped in red: General Steamship Corporation, Chartering Department, Ship Brokers, San Francisco, Cal. Often there are notes in the margins of the pages indicating commission paid, date and amount. A few are stamped: Empire Shipping Company, Limited, Chartering Department, Vancouver, Canada. There are also agreements of sale for various vessels. On the inside of the back cover of these volumes is inscribed, per Allan K. Hulme 3-28-63. Alan K. Hulme, Manager Chartering Dept. appears as the company's signatory on many of these agreements.
The collection is comprised of 6 volumes: Volume 1, 1923-1926; Volume 2, 1927-1928; Volume 3, 1929-1930; Volume 4, 1931-1933; Volume 5, 1934-1938; and Volume 6, 1939-1941.
