    Biography

    William Wyler was a German-born director, producer, and screenwriter active in film from 1923 to 1970. He emigrated to the United States in the early 1920s. Wyler worked for Universal Pictures, first in New York, then in Hollywood from around 1922 to 1936. Wyler received Academy Awards for directing MRS. MINIVER (1942), THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946), and BEN-HUR (1959). His other nominations for directing include WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1939) and THE HEIRESS (1949). For ROMAN HOLIDAY (1953) and FRIENDLY PERSUASION (1956) he was nominated in both the directing and best picture categories. Wyler received the 1965 Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.
