the Russian-American painter Victor Arnautoff and the Australian-born U.S. labor leader and
longtime head of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU) Harry
Bridges, as well his research on Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA)
activists in twentieth-century San Francisco. Materials include reproductions and
translations of archival materials from the United States, Russia, and Australia, journal
articles and book chapters, and over 100 oral history interviews with labor organizers,

Processing Information
Processed by Devin McGeehan Muchmore in 2023.
Cherny delivered the collection in 29 file cartons and 6 plastic file drawers, as well as
several audio cassette storage containers and boxes. A few posters arrived separately,
without housing. The file cartons were all labeled by Cherny according to broad topics
("HB;" "SF History;" "Communists;" and "Arnautoff.") and sometimes subtopics. The broad
topics have been retained as series, with narrower topics informing the subseries.
Nearly all paper materials arrived in folders. All folders were replaced with acid-free
folders. The majority of folder titles were retained.
The audio cassettes and tape reels were kept in the individual cases they arrived in.
The processor consulted with Cherny regarding arrangement and the identification of some
files throughout processing.

Politics, and Postwar Political Culture
(with William Issel and Keiran Taylor,
2004) and
California Women and Politics: From the Gold Rush to the Great
Depression
(with Mary Ann Irwin and Ann Marie Wilson, 2011). He also co-authored
two textbooks, an online book, and numerous book chapters and articles.
Cherny grew up and attended primary and secondary school in Beatrice, Nebraska. In 1965, he
graduated with a B.A. (with distinction) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He went on
to graduate school at Columbia University, earning an M.A. in 1967 and Ph.D. in 1972, both
in history.
In 1971, Cherny took a position as Instructor in the Department of History at San Francisco
State University. The following year, he became Assistant Professor, moving up to Associate
in 1977 before becoming a Full Professor in 1981. He spent a five year term as department
chair (1987-1992), in addition to serving as Acting Dean of the School of Behavioral and
Social Sciences in 1984-1985 and Interim Dean of Undergraduate Studies in 2005-2008. Cherny
retired from teaching in 2012.
In 1985, Harry Bridges, the retired president of the International Longshore and Warehouse
Union (ILWU), and Nariko (Nikki) Sawada Bridges, a writer, activist, and Harry's wife, asked
Cherny if he would write Harry Bridges' biography. Cherny agreed, conducting oral history
interviews with Harry Bridges and over 70 of Bridges' family members, friends, trade
unionists and other left-wing activists and visiting dozens of archives. In 1996, he served
as Distinguished Fulbright Lecturer at the Lomonosov Moscow State University, allowing him
to conduct research in the newly accessible records of the Communist Party of the Soviet
Union. He ultimately published
Harry Bridges: Labor Radical, Labor Legend in
2023.
Cherny's research for Bridges' biography spawned two additional books. The first is a
biography of the Russian-American painter Victor Arnautoff, published as
Victor
Arnautoff and the Politics of Art
in 2017. The second is a study of members of the
Communist Party of the United States in California, titled
San Francisco Reds:
Communists in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1919-1958
.
Content Description
The Robert W. Cherny research files contain materials gathered by Cherny in the course of
his research for
Victor Arnautoff and the Politics of Art (2017),
Harry Bridges: Labor Radical, Labor Legend (2023), and
San Francisco
Reds: Communists in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1919-1958
, as well as reference
files on the social and political history of San Francisco in the late-nineteenth and
early-twentieth centuries.
The majority of the collection consists of reproductions of archival materials from across
the United States, as well as the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History and
archives in Australia. These sources document the broad sweep of Harry Bridges' activities
as a labor leader in the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the
International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU), including his participation in
the San Francisco 1934 waterfront and general strikes; Victor Arnautoff's biography,
evolving artistic practice, and the political controversies surrounding his artwork; and the
activism of over 50 San Francisco-based Communist Party of the United States of America
(CPUSA) members between 1919 and the late 1950s, including their involvement in the labor
movement and relationships with the national party and the Comintern.
Cherny's research files include recordings and transcripts from over 100 oral history
interviews with labor organizers, attorneys, and communist activists.
Also included are student papers, writings by other scholars, and newsletters related to
the histories of maritime labor and American communism.

Content Description
Materials gathered by Cherny in the course of researching and writing
Victor
Arnautoff and the Politics of Art
(2017), a biography of the Russian-American
painter Victor Arnautoff (1896-1979). Included are an English-translation of Arnautoff's
1965 Russian-language autobiography and transcriptions of interviews with family and
acquaintances. Reproductions of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and government
records document Arnautoff's years in China and Mexico, his time as a student at the
California School of Fine Arts and his relationship with Diego Rivera, and his work as a
teacher at Stanford University and the California Labor School. Arnautoff's artistic
activities, including murals in Coit Tower, the George Washington High School, and Post
Offices around the San Francisco Bay Area, are documented by clippings, correspondence,
pamphlets, and digital photographs from the National Archives and Records
Administration. Controversies surrounding Arnautoff's artworks, particularly the Dix
McSmear lithograph and subsequent HUAC appearance, are documented by reproductions of
newspaper clippings and correspondence. The series also includes WWII-era correspondence
between Michael Arnautoff, Victor Arnautoff's son, and Lydia Arnautoff, Victor
Arnautoff's wife and Michael's mother.

Biography of Harry Bridges
Alfred (Harry) Renton Bridges (1901 July 28-1990 March 30) was an Australian-born
seaman and longshoremen and prominent U.S. labor leader, serving as head of the
International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU, now International Longshore
and Warehouse Union) for forty years (1937-1977).
Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1901, Bridges left home to work as a seaman at age 16.
In 1920, Bridges moved to San Francisco and worked as a seaman along the Pacific coast.
He briefly joined the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) in 1921. In 1922, Bridges
took work as a longshoreman in San Francisco. The following year, Bridges joined the
company union, called the "Blue Book."
By the end of the 1920s, Bridges was increasingly involved in labor actions. He helped
lead a failed vote to affiliate the Blue Book with the International Longshoremen's
Association (ILA). The ILA, emboldened by the Industrial Recovery Act, set out to
organize the waterfront again in 1933. Bridges helped to lead these efforts to form ILA
Local 38-79, organizing with a slate of militants dubbed the "Albion Hall group."
In 1934, Bridges played a leading role in the Waterfront and then General Strike of
1934. He was then elected President of ILA Local 38-79, going on to become head of the
ILA's Pacific District in 1936. In 1937, he led most ILA locals on the Pacific Coast to
found the ILWU, which quickly affiliated with the growing Congress of Industrial
Organizations (CIO).
Bridges remained head of the ILWU for forty years, seeing the union through major
strikes in 1936-1937, 1948, and 1971-1972. He also played a key role in negotiating the
Mechanization and Modernization Agreement of 1960 (M and M), which set the terms for
containerization in western ports.
Bridges' militancy and sometime association with communists earned him accusations of
Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA) membership. This accusation, in turn,
fuelled twenty years of attempts by federal officials and politicians to deport Bridges.
A 1939 Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) hearing charged Bridges with being a
current member of the CPUSA. A 1941 Smith Act hearing then charged Bridges with having
previously been affiliated with the CPUSA. In 1949, a federal grand jury brought charges
against Bridges, as well as Henry Schmidt and J.R. Robertson, accusing them of
committing perjury during Bridges's naturalization hearing by denying he was a
communist. In 1954, federal attorneys launched a civil suit to denaturalize Bridges.
Bridges was never deported and ultimately retained his citizenship.
Harry Bridges married three times. He married Agnes Brown in 1934. They divorced in
1945. Bridges then married Nancy Fenton Berdicio, in 1946. They divorced in 1955.
Bridges third marriage in December 1958 was to Noriko (Nikki) Sawada, a
Japanese-American writer and activist. They remained married until Bridges' death in
1990.
Bridges was also the father of four children: Katherine (Kathy), Robert (Rob), Julie,
and Betty Jacqueline (Jackie).

Biographical / Historical
In 1980, Harry Bridges and Noriko (Nikki) Sawada Bridges [later Flynn], a
Japanese-American writer, activist, and Harry Bridges' wife, contracted with the
journalist Charles Einstein to write Harry Bridges' biography. Einstein recorded
these interviews with Harry Bridges in support of this project. After Einstein
presented a draft of the manuscript to Bridges, Bridges rejected the manuscript
and ended their collaboration.
