Biographical / Historical

Founded in 2001, Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing (GLEH) is a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles, California. GLEH was founded to develop and maintain the nation's first affordable housing complex specifically for lower-income LGBT senior citizens.
GLEH was formed from a community-based group called the Alliance for Diverse Aging Community Services (A-DACS) under the auspices of the Los Angeles LGBT Center. With the support of a start-up grant of $90,000 established by California Governor Gray Davis, A-DACS began a program to address the needs of LGBT older adults. Their activities included researching gaps in services for LGBT seniors, developing a strategic plan for creating and maintaining such services, and establishing a network of service providers who were sensitive to the specific needs of LGBT older adults, including those living with HIV/AIDS.
In 2003-2004, contruction began on a 104-unit affordable housing development on the corner of Selma and Ivar Avenues in Hollywood. The development, later named Triangle Square, officially broke ground on July 14, 2005, and within a year, GLEH began accepting applications for low-income residents.
Triangle Square held its grand opening and welcomed its first residents in 2007. As GLEH's website states, "The $21.5M, 104-unit building located on the corner of Selma and Ivar Avenues in Hollywood, is designed to house individuals of mixed incomes under an affordable housing model. The unit mix consists of 96 one- and 8 two-bedroom units targeted to low income seniors. 34% of the units will be designated for seniors with HIV/AIDS, homeless or at risk of homelessness."
