Background
Manuel Luis Carlos came to the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1965 as a PhD candidate in Political Science, with
a subfield in Political Anthropology. After graduating, he joined UCSB's Department of Anthropology as an Acting Assistant
Professor, where he stayed as a fulltime professor until his appointment as Professor Emeritus in 1994. His hiring marked
the first Mexican-American faculty member on campus, and he would advocate for the hiring of other Latino/a and Chicano/a
faculty both in and out of the Anthropology department throughout his tenure.
