Scope and Contents

The collection is mainly comprised of a family correspondence between John Glover of Monmouth, Glasgow, and his wife, as well as to their daughter, Lucy Freeman (nee Glover); the bulk of these letters is written in the early 19th century. Manuscript poems, eulogies, and other literary pieces are also included. Another component of the collection consists of 20th century letters and documents relating to the death of John Halcott "Hal" Glover, as well as earlier letters from Hal Glover to his sister, Lucy Lyon.

Biographical / Historical

John Glover (active 1782-1819) of Monmouth, Glasgow married Lucy Lowder and had a daughter, Lucy. He is most likely the same John Glover that received a patent in 1800 for a method of bleaching linen cloths, per the Annual Register published in London in 1801. He previously owned the estate of Great Lever, in the county of Lancaster, before losing it to bankruptcy debt in 1805. His daughter Lucy married James Freeman in 1808.
John Halcott Glover (1877-1949) was a friend of poet, novelist, and literary scholar Richard Aldington (1892-1962). He had a sister named Lucy Lyon. At his death, Halcott Glover left a third of his property to Catherine Aldington, the daughter of Richard Aldington.
