Biography/Administrative History

Summit School was the first public school in Mill Valley, and was also known as the Eastland School or the Mill Valley Grammar School. It I was built in 1892 as a one room schoolhouse on the corner of Summit and Cornelia Avenues, on land donated by the Tamalpais Land & Water Company. Summit School initially had 1 teacher and 35 pupils, in grades 1-8. In 1894 a second classroom was added, and in 1900 the main floor was expanded and a second floor was added. When Tamalpais Park School opened in 1939, the school was no longer needed; the building was demolished in 1941.

Scope and Content of Collection

This collection contains class lists, photographs, attendance records, board meeting minutes, teacher lists, school administrative documents and ephemera from Summit School during its existence. There are some photographs of teachers at Tamalpais Park School from 1940, after Summit School closed. There are also clippings and correspondence relating to a reunion of Summit School Alumni in 1988. There is a large scrapbook and five class list binders; the rest of the collection is housed in folders.
