Abstract: Sheet music, writings, corrspondence, personal papers, subject files, photographs and sound recordings, circa 1915-1999, from composer Gale Hunt (also known as Gary Borden Hall). The bulk of the collection pertains to Hunt's original musical, A San Francisco Sunday (1994), for which he wrote the book, music, and lyrics. The collection also includes papers and photographs documenting Hunt's personal life and extended family.

Biography

Gale Borden Hunt was born on February 19, 1914, and grew up in Wallace, Idaho, before moving to Spokane, Washington, during his high school years. Following high school, Hunt moved to Los Angeles where he earned his degree from Los Angeles State College. He married a woman named Madeleine and had a son, David. They raised their son into the mid-1970s until Madeleine's death. Hunt served in the 19th Medical General Laboratory for the United States Army Service Forces, then worked as an analyst for the Pacific Telephone Company from 1948 until he retired in 1979.
Hunt was a composer who published original sheet music beginning in the 1940s. He spent much of his retirement years traveling, as well as writing and recording the book, music, and lyrics for his original musical, A San Francisco Sunday (also known as Lucky Sunday), written under the pseudonym Gary Borden Hall. The musical centers on the lives of same-sex parents and transgender individuals.
Hunt died on April 29, 1999, in Los Angeles, California.
