The Costume Designers Guild was formed in 1953 as an independent organization that negotiated separate contracts for its members
who were either freelance designers or designers under contract to a studio. The Guild was formed exclusively for costume
designers and in 1976, joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees as local 892.
