Papers contain correspondence, diaries, printed materials, ephemera, and materials related to the history of the Newton family
compiled by Douglass Newton. The correspondence is largely from Fred to his wife Ruth during his years spent as a missionary
in India, but also includes numerous condolence letters sent to Ruth after Fred's death in 1941. The diaries cover Frederic's
years at Princeton as well as some from his earlier years in India.
Biographical / Historical
Frederic Janvier Newton (1876-1941) was a Presbyterian missionary who served in India from 1903 until his death in 1941 from
paratyphoid. His father and grandfather had been missionaries in India as well. Newton graduated from Princeton Seminary in
1901 before beginning his service under the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in 1903. In 1914 he wed Ruth
A. Campbell, a trained nurse, and the two had five children together: Margaret, Henry, John, Edward, and Frederic.
