Scope and Content

Research files of Paul Vernon, author of Ethnic and Vernacular Music, 1898-1960 (Westport CT: Greenwood, 1995). Vernon's book was the first to give a broad overview of folk and "ethnic" recordings made by the major record companies (HMV, Columbia, Victor and others) during the 78rpm era.
The research files are primarily photocopies of documents, including trade catalogs, corporate correspondence, and published articles. Many documents likely were copied from the EMI Archive in London about its various operations around the world before WWII. The collection is arranged geographically.
