Captain Ed Shields, 1916-2008
Capt. Ed Shields was the son of Capt. J.E. Shields (1881-1962) owner of the Pacific Coast Codfish Company, Poulsbo, Washington.
Shields made his first trip to the Bering Sea as a codfisherman at 18 and then worked the following summers while earning
his Masters Degree in Engineering from Harvard. In 1950, he made the last commercial fishing voyage under sail as Captain
of the C.A. Thayer. His memoirs and history "Salt of the Sea: The Pacific Coast Cod Fishery and the Last Days of Sail" was
published in 2001.

The Captain Ed Shields motion picture film of the last voyage of the C.A. Thayer (built 1895; schooner, 3m), 1950 (P82-036,
SAFR 18448) consists of a 16mm silent color film by Captain Shields on her last codfishing voyage in 1950.

edited together digitally.
