    Immediate Source of Acquisition

Transferred from the Panama-Pacific International Exposition records (BANC MSS C-A 190). These records were a gift to the library in 1938-1939, from the Panama-Pacific International Exposition Company via the Trustees of the War Memorial, San Francisco.

    Scope and Content

Photographs, mostly by H.S. Crocker and Company, chiefly comprising Panama-Pacific International Exposition preparation and construction views taken in 1913-1914, exposition site views at various stages, exposition officials and dignitaries, photographs of artists’ design drawings for buildings, and crowds attending the 1915 opening and other events. Some photographs of sculptural works and other artworks are present, a few including the artist posed by the art work. Late in 1914, a new photographic contract for the exposition was awarded and it went to the Cardinell-Vincent Co., who were official photographers for the last weeks of preparation and throughout the duration of the exposition. Some photographs in these albums are by Cardinell-Vincent photographers. Very few interior or exhibit views are present.

    Note

Most photographs were numbered and captioned by the creators, and captions were transcribed for this finding aid. When no captions (or insufficient captions) were present, titles were devised by library assistants and recorded within square brackets. Transcriptions are not precise in that obvious abbreviated words have been spelled out, without use of brackets, to aid in search and retrieval.
This guide does not list every item in every volume and part because many of the parts are highly duplicative. Items in parts that were entirely duplicative have not been individually listed. Rather, a note in the volume information (below) indicates that contents are mostly or entirely duplicates, and gives the location of copies that are listed. Only views not found and listed elsewhere have been recorded under that volume or part. For more detail on changes to physical housing, arrangement, and numbering, see series-level notes for “Albums and Photographic Prints,” below.
Additional exhibit building locations, architectural names, and works of art were identified using the following books:

    3. The Sculpture and Mural Decorations of the Exposition; a pictorial survey of the art of the Panama-Pacific international exposition, described by Stella G. S. Perry. San Francisco: P. Elder and Company, 1915.
