Scope and Contents

This collection contains scripts, production notes, interviews, essays, program notes, reviews, personal papers, creative writings, correspondence, catalogs, photographs, slides of paintings, and other materials related to the life and work of California experimental filmmaker Sara Kathryn Arledge (1911-1998). The entire collection consists of three boxes containing eighty folders, three three-ring binders, and one 9" x 12" x 2" box of notes.

Separated Materials

An unmarked first edition of the book Experiment in the Film (Manvell, Roger, ed. London: The Gray Walls Press Limited, 1949) has been cataloged and integrated into the PFA library. The films, glass transparencies, and miscellaneous audio-visual materials included in Terry and Mary Cannon's donation are housed in the film collection.

This series contains personal and business correspondence received by Arledge and by Terry Cannon on behalf of Arledge, as well as drafts of correspondence sent by Arledge. This series also contains two letters sent by Arledge's mother to her husband in 1919, each of which is accompanied by a note written by the young Sara Arledge. Correspondence relating to Arledge's conservatorship and the creation of the Sara Kathryn Arledge Memorial Trust may be found in Series 4: Personal papers: Legal.
