Biographical / Historical
The Center for Independent Living (CIL) had its roots in the 1960s as the Physically Disabled Students Program at the University
of California, Berkeley. The organization was officially founded in 1972 by Edward V. Roberts, Hale Zukas, and Jan McEwan
Brown. CIL provides support services that allow people with disabilities to live independently and advocates for social and
legal changes on behalf of the disability community.
Scope and Content
The records are organized into 10 series: 1. Director's Office; 2. Board of Directors; 3. Hale Zukas and Kitty Cone accessible
architecture and transportation materials; 4. Publications; 5. Legal sources; 6. 21st Century Conference on Independent Living
files; 7. Newsclippings. 8. Strike ballots; 9. Pamphlets and informational materials; 10. Organizational history. The records
date from the organization's founding in 1972 and mostly document the history of the organization in the 1970s and 1980s.
A few records date from the 1990s.
