Abstract: This collection is comprised primarily of correspondence within the Treat and Everson families (1860-1908), who founded the Elk Grove Building Company in 1876 with W. A. Chittendon. The company was responsible for the construction of many commercial structures in the town.

Julius Everson was born in Cayuga County, New York, in 1833, the son of William and Catherine Everson. Julius farmed with his family in New York until 1851, at which time he moved to Elk Grove, California. In 1873, Julius married Alvira Treat, the daughter of Catherine (Gage) Treat and Sullivan Treat, one of Elk Grove's early settlers. Julius and Alvira had two children: Walter Terry and Lester Treat. Julius established himself as a successful businessman in Elk Grove. In 1876, Everson founded the Elk Grove Building Company in partnership with W. A. Chittendon. The Company was responsible for the construction of many commercial structures in the town, including the building later occupied by the Chittedndon & Everson general merchandise store. Julius Everson died at his home in Elk Grove on December 1, 1900, after many years of failing health. Alvira Everson passed away on January 15, 1917.

This small collection is comprised primarily of correspondence within the Treat and Everson families (1860-1908). It includes a letter from Sullivan Treat (1860) to Benjamin and John Gage concerning the land and weather in the Sacramento area and the operation of Sullivan's Elk Grove farm; an invitation to a Grand Dedication Ball for the Elk Grove Building Co. (July 2, 1875); a card with a printed poem composed for "Mrs. Treat" by Effie D. Whitman from the Elk Grove Women's Christian Temperance Union (1899); letters addresssed to Julius Everson from Benjamin Gage and Lester Treat on Everson Bros. & Co. letterhead (1900).; a letter written from Julius to Lester on Tuscan Springs (a Red Bluff, California, health resort) letterhead that features an advertisement on the verso (1900); a letter from Walter Everson to his mother on The Tallac, Lake Tahoe, California, letterhead, descibing his time at Lake Tahoe (1908); and calling cards for Lester and Walter Everson.
