Biography

John Davis Green (1917-1964) born in Surrey, England, showed an early interest in science. He received his B.A. with honors from St. Johns College, Oxford University in 1939, and three years later a B.M. and B.Ch.(Oxon). He also earned M.A. and M.D. degrees from Oxford, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. In 1943 he became a Demonstrator in Anatomy at Cambridge University. In 1946 a fellowship in Anatomy brought Dr. Green to the United States at Wayne University, Detroit, MI, where he worked until 1952, winning a five-year Markle Scholarship in Medical Sciences during his stay. In 1952 Dr. Greene was recruited to the new UCLA Medical School as Associate Professor of Anatomy, and he remained at that institution until his untimely death in 1964.
Dr. Green began research into the nervous control of the pituitary gland together with Dr. Geoffrey Harris at Cambridge. He continued these studies at Wayne, publishing important papers, including a classical comparative anatomical study on common pituitary portal system features in air-breathing vertebrates. At UCLA he expanded his studies into electrophysiology and electron microscopy, and made major contributions in neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neuroendocrinology. He was widely sought for as a lecturer at major international meetings, and played host to a number of visiting scientists and students from around the world.
