Biographical Information
Joseph Asher was born in Germany in 1921. In the late 1930s, he left Germany and went to England to begin his rabbinical
studies. Rabbi Asher immigrated to the United States in 1948 and attended Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio. From
1949-1967, Asher served congregations in Florida, Alabama, and North Carolina. His final rabbinical post was at Temple Emanu-El
in San Francisco, California from 1967-1985. Asher also served as a member of a German-American committee, the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, that taught German youth about Jews and Judaism and became a visiting professor in West Berlin. In
1989, West Germany awarded Asher the Grand Cross of Merit. He died in 1990, at the age of 69 years.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Joseph Asher papers consist of materials related to Rabbi Asher's rabbinical work, including correspondence and sermons.
In addition, the collection contains materials relating to his work with the American Jewish Congress, Brandeis Hillel Day
School, the American Jewish Committee, the Bureau of Jewish Education, the Board of Rabbis of Northern California, and the
Pacific Association of Reform Rabbis. Also included are papers relating to Asher's work on the United States Holocaust Memorial
Council, the founding entity and governing body of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, as well as photographs, published
writings, and condolence letters.
