Organizational/Biographical History
The National Women's Political Caucus was founded in 1971 by a group of prominent women that included Gloria Steinem, former
Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, former Congresswoman Bella Abzug, Dorothy Height, and Jill Ruckelshaus as the only national
organization dedicated exclusively to increasing women's participation in all areas of political and public life. Subsequently,
the Santa Clara County Caucus was established in 1973, as a way to specifically help elect female politicians to local government.
Through financial and moral support, the local Santa Clara County Caucus promoted and helped elect the first female mayor
of San Jose, Janet Gray Hayes, as well as Susan Hammer, Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, Zoe Lofgren and many more female politicians
to all levels of government regardless of party affiliation. In 2002, the Santa Clara County Caucus disbanded due to inactivity.
