    Biographical / Historical

    Corporal Jesse M. Underwood, United States Army (1879 - 1961) was born in Milroy, Pennsylvania to Zepheniah, and Clara Bell Underwood.
    Cpl. Underwood served with Company B, 5th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry between June 28, 1898 to November 7, 1898 during the Spanish-American War. He also served with Company D, 47th United States Volunteer Infantry in Manila between September 7, 1898 to July 2, 1901 during the Philippine-American War.
    Jesse M. Underwood married Mary Frances Underwood, and together raised Clara J., and Jesse A. Underwood. According to the donor, Underwood "lived most of his life in Lock Haven, PA [and] was a railroad engineer for the Pennsylvania Rail Road."

    Content Description

    This collection contains two photocopied correspondence written by Cpl. Jesse M. Underwood, USA to unknown recipients during the Philippine-American War. This collection also contains two photocopied transcriptions of Underwood's correspondence transcribed by the donor, and one photocopied photograph of Underwood.
    Underwood wrote December 22, 1899 about a "battle eight miles from Manilla [sic]" and recorded casualties for both the US forces and the Filipino forces. He wrote again December 25, 1899 to "Dear ones at home" about his arrival at Manila on December 22, 1899 and detailed Company D's journey through Pasig river and described the local people.
    This collection also contains two photocopied documents printed from Ancestry.com. Both documents record Underwood's military record during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War.
