    Biography/Administrative History

    Thomas L. Pickering was a native of New Hampshire; he worked as a joiner in San Francisco and then moved to San Diego to build wharves, dying there in 1851. James L. Gibson was born in Canada and came to California. In 1870 he was toll collector, Strawberry Valley, Yuba County, and he and his family settled in San Francisco about 1879. He was proprietor of Aldine Photograph Gallery in San Francisco in 1880, and died here in 1897.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    This abstract of title includes 72 pages. Earliest instrument is the certificate of grant of Nov. 19, 1849 from John W. Geary, Alcalde, to Thomas L. Pickering, highest bidder at an auction sale; the latest instrument is the mortgage from Nancie Woodburn Gibson and James L. Gibson to German Savings and Loan Society, June 20, 1894. A map is found on page [20].
