Scope and Content of Collection

This leather-bound diary documents the daily work and personal activities of an unidentified employee of the Erie Railway Company for the year 1872. His interactions with Erastus O. Hill who was at this time General Master Mechanic of the Erie, suggest he may been an employee of the Mechanical Department. He appears to have worked primarily at the Jersey City, New Jersey shops, but also spent time at the Erie's general offices in Port Jervis and Paterson. His work activities include visits to various locomotive works to determine repair costs and the purchase of tools and machinery. This meticulous diarist also records the daily temperature, daily expenses and income, and the birth of a son on August 30.
