Biographical/Historical note

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art was originally the Art Division of the Los Angeles County Museum of Science, History, and Art which opened at Exposition Park near downtown Los Angeles in 1913. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art or LACMA officially became an independent entity in 1961, and opened its own campus on Wilshire Blvd., about 7 miles northeast of the original museum, in 1965. The earliest recordings in this collection, dated in 1963 and 1964 were recorded at the museum's Exposition Park campus. LACMA has for many years recorded or filmed performances, interviews and other programming, even producing original educational films. The earliest recordings in this collection may have been created by an entity of the County of Los Angeles with most recordings being created by earlier permutations of the museum's current (2017) Program Audiovisual Department. Audio tours were produced by museum education staff, often with the support of LACMA docents and the museum's Docent Council.

Scope and Contents note

The Audio Visual Department reel to reel audio recordings collection consist of at least 825 1/4-inch open real audio tapes as well as audio cassettes dated as early as 1963 and as late as 1991. The processing of the collection is ongoing and total item counts for all series are expected to increase and date ranges are expected to expand. The collection is primarily composed of recorded lectures, presentations, panel discussions, interviews, question and answer sessions, exhibition audio tours, musical performances, and recordings of music and sound effects to accompany exhibitions, dance performances or films. Lectures, presentations, panels, and question and answer sessions are primarily on art historical topics directly related to the permanent art collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art or to its current exhibitions at the time of the recording. Programing on topics of general interest to the museum's constituency are also included such as panel discussions sponsored by ASIFA, the International Animated Film Society, presentations relating to architecture from ancient to modern, including presentations by architectural historians David Gebhard and Esther McCoy and a talk given by novelist and former California gubernatorial candidate Upton Sinclair in 1964. Artists, critics, art historians, and LACMA curators are the most frequent participants. Artists represented include Edward Kienholz, Robert Irwin, Newton Harrison, Lee Mullican, Joe Young, Robert Motherwell, Gifford Phillips, Tony Berlant, Charles White, Loren Madsen, Mary Corse, Ed Moses, Chris Burden, Alexis Smith, Larry Bell, and Max Bill. Contemporary artists are often in conversation with LACMA modern art curator Maurice Tuchman or prominent critics such as Max Kozloff, David Antin, and Melinda Wortz. The collection also includes press conferences, public service announcements and radio interviews with museum curators, art collectors, donors, and administrators on issues important to the museum, including several recordings of the KPFK program The Sour Apple Tree hosted by Clare Spark Loeb. The most notable recorded musical performances in the collection are of the Monday Evening Concerts series that debuted many contemporary classical compositions. Other musical performances included international music related to current exhibitions of, for example, Indonesian or African art. Recorded tours are primarily Acoustigiuide tours of LACMA exhibitions narrated by docents or actors such as Vincent Price who appears on the tour for The Masterworks of Mexican Art in 1963 and Stirling Holloway who speaks on the tour of Billy Al Bengston in 1968 along with the artist himself and architect Frank Gehry who designed the exhibition.

Arrangement note

This collection is arranged into five series, as they were categorized by the creating department: Recorded Lectures (with item numbers beginning with "RL"), Recorded Interviews (with item numbers beginning with "RI"), Recorded Performances (with item numbers beginning with "RP"), Recorded Tours (with item numbers beginning with "RT"), and Recorded Music (with item numbers beginning with "RM"). The order of the series within the collection was determined by the archivist. The types of recordings placed into each series are not always consistent. For example, the Recorded Lectures series includes panel discussions involving several individuals as well as formal lectures and what would strictly be considered an interview (in which one individual asks another questions). Similarly, the Recorded Interviews series also includes public service announcements and group discussions, with the most consistent similarity being that the content was intended for radio broadcast.
Within each series, the recordings are arranged by item number. Item numbers usually include a concluding numeral of "5" or "7" denoting a five or seven-inch audio reel. The preceding digits of the number may be repeated and only differentiated by this concluding numeral. Reels were numbered roughly in the order they were created in. The item numbers correspond to physical audio reels and not to specific works, performances, or programs. Several unrelated programs may be recorded onto the same reel.

Recorded Lectures 1964-1989

Scope and Contents note

The Recorded Lectures consists of at least 475 1/4-inch open reel audio tapes with recordings dating from about 1964 through 1989. It includes recordings of lectures and presentations at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and related to its programming and collections. The series also includes a significant percentage of recordings that are not lectures. These include panel discussions, poetry readings, gallery discussions with curators and artists, as well as question and answer sessions with artists, curators and museum administrators.
The subject matter of these lectures, panels and presentations includes all areas of collecting at LACMA including South and Southeast Asian art, modern and contemporary art, costumes and textiles, decorative and applied arts, prints and drawings, and American and European painting and sculpture. Panels related to specific areas such as costumes and textiles or decorative arts may be sponsored by or convened for the members of one of LACMA's collecting or service councils, such as the Decorative Arts Council, the Costume Council, the Art Museum Council, Graphic Arts Council (later the Prints and Drawings Council), or the Museum Service Council. Some lectures were specifically convened as training for museum docents which may have included teaching techniques, general art history lectures or training for a specific exhibition such as Art and Technology ("Docent training: Art & Technology Maurice Tuchman, Jane Livingston, Melinda Turbell", April 26, 1971, RL-0160-5) and King Tut ("Docent training; "Egyptian Civilization and Culture" by Dr. James Brashler...", October 1977, RL-0333-5).
Artists participating in question and answer sessions or panels include Edward Kienholz, Robert Irwin, Newton Harrison, Lee Mullican, Joe Young, Robert Motherwell, Gifford Phillips, Tony Berlant, Charles White, Loren Madsen, Mary Gorse, Eugene Sturman, Jon Abbott, Paul Dillon, Ed Moses, Chris Burden, Tom Moodle, Alexis Smith, Larry Bell, and Max Bill. Artists are often in conversation with curators and critics, most notably Maurice Tuchman and Jane Livingston of LACMA, as well as Max Kozloff, David Antin, and Melinda Wortz. Some of the most important panels and presentations relate to the exhibition Two Centuries of Black American Art with speakers and panelists including the exhibition curator David C. Driskell and artists Selma Burke, Charles White, Betye Saar, Suzanne Jackson, Alonzo Davis, and John Outterbridge.
Other unique and notable presenters include architectural critics and historians David Gebhard and Esther McCoy speaking on the architect Rudolph Schindler during the exhibition R. M. Schindler: An Exhibition of The Architecture of R. M. Schindler (1887 - 1953) in 1967, Upton Sinclair speaking on the Epic Campaign of 1934 in 1964, and several talks given by Tamarind Lithography Workshop Founder June Wayne.

Recorded Interviews 1963-1981

Scope and Contents note

The Recorded Interviews series consists of at least 57 1/4-inch open real audio recordings and includes primarily interviews with artists conducted at LACMA as well as with museum staff and benefactors dating from about 1963 through 1981. The series seems to have grouped together recordings not necessarily of interviews but of content meant to be broadcasted by radio.
This series includes 15 recorded episodes of Clare Spark’s program The Sour Apple Tree for KPFK. Guests of the program include collector of Mexican Art Proctor Stafford during the exhibition of his Pre-Columbian collection at LACMA in 1970; LACMA curators Larry Curry and Pratapaditya Pal speaking on John Marin and Indian Art respectively; collector Edwin Binney 3rd speaking on Mogul miniatures; and Samella Lewis, Al Cannon, Bernie Casey, and Leon Banks discussing the state of LACMA’s relationship to the African American community within Los Angeles County in 1970.
Other recordings include Robert Rauschenberg in conversation with John Cage in 1963, Sam Benson speaking with Richard Brown in 1965 shortly after the opening of LACMA's Wilshire Blvd. location, Maurice Tuchman speaking with Edward Kienholz, and Ruth Bowman speaking to LACMA's head of conservation Ben B. Johnson.
This series also includes LACMA public service radio announcements for various exhibitions and press conferences including those held on the occasion of the visit of Soviet Minister of Culture Yekaterina Furtzeva in 1973 and the 1974 gift of sculpture to the museum by Gerald B. Cantor.

Recorded Tours 1970-1980

Scope and Contents note

The Recorded Tours series consists of at least 70 1/4-inch open reel audio recordings dating from about 1970 through 1980. The recordings are primarily Acoustiguide tours of LACMA exhibitions and installations. Exhibition tours in the series include Edward Kienholz in 1966, American Sculpture of the Sixties in 1967, and Two Centuries of Black American Art in 1976. These tours give a unique perspective on the layout, presentation, and content of past exhibitions at the museum and for some provide the most complete picture of an exhibition available. This is the case for the audio tour narrated by Vincent Price for the 1963 exhibition The Masterworks of Mexican Art. The tour for Billy Al Bengston in 1968 includes commentary by art collector and voice actor Stirling Holloway, Billy Al Bengston himself, and the exhibition's designer, architect Frank Gehry.
