Biographical History

Jean Holloway (1917-1989), born Gratia Jean Casey, was a screenwriter of both radio and television programs. An alumna of San Jose State College, Holloway began writing successful screenplays for several prestigious radio shows. She went on to be contracted with MGM Studios and wrote three musical film scripts between 1946 and 1948. While Holloway was writing television’s first daytime, live continuous soap opera “The First 100 Years,” she met her husband, actor Dan Tobin.

Scope and Content of Collection

The Jean Holloway Papers (1932-1948) contains typed manuscripts and handwritten creative works by screenwriter and San Jose State College alumna Jean Holloway. The bulk of the collection consists of screenplays, poetry, radio scripts and some coursework from her time in college.

This collection is arranged into three series: Series I. Creative Writing; Series II. Scripts and Screenplays; and Series III. Personal Materials.

Series I. Creative Writing Series I 1932 - 1940

Physical Description: 2.0 foldersThis series documents a selection of Jean Holloway’s creative writing activities, including poetry and short stories. Holloway used both lyric and narrative poetry styles, with some poems containing correction marks from professors and her own rhythm and meter notations. The poems and short stories represent some of her class assignments while a student at San Jose State College. Several of Holloway’s class assignments include notes from a professor suggesting where the work could be submitted for publication. Poems about Washington Square, San Jose State College writing professor Carl Holliday, and a short story about the same professor are of special interest for local historians. Files are arranged by format.

Series II. Scripts and Screenplays

Physical Description: 2.0 foldersThis series comprises the bulk of the Jean Holloway Papers collection and contains complete and partial scripts for radio and television programs such as “Coming Through the Rye” and “The Last of the Men About Town.” Included are a presentation script and three additional proposed scripts for a radio series titled “The Townspeople.” This program was created as a public relations vehicle for the Association of Reserve City Bankers, utilizing a drama series to increase public opinion regarding free banking.

Series III. Personal Materials

Physical Description: 3.0 foldersThis series consists of Jean Holloway’s personal notebooks, correspondence, accolades, and high school publications. A bound notebook dated August 8, 1932 contains Holloway’s handwritten poetry and short stories with illustrations, as well as newspaper clippings of her published work. In her notebook titled “Home Problems,” Holloway wrote domestic advice. Her high school publications are represented with a copy of San Jose High School 1935 newspaper, the School Herald, where Holloway served as Features Editor.
