Biographical / Historical
The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music (previously Cabrillo Music Festival), is an
annual music festival in Santa Cruz, California that features symphonic works by
contemporary composers. The origins of the Festival begin with a 1961 concert series held at
the Sticky Wicket coffeehouse in Aptos, California. Lou Harrison, Robert Hughes, Alyce
Vestal, Bud Kretschmer, Ted Toews, and Sticky Wicket owners Vic and Sidney Jowers were among
the early figures who shaped the Festival. In 1963, the series was moved to the Cabrillo
College Theater and officially became the Cabrillo Music Festival. In the late 1970s, the
Festival broke affiliation with Cabrillo College and was held at various locations
throughout Santa Cruz county during the 1980s. It has been held primarily at the Santa Cruz
Civic Auditorium since 1991, with frequent performances at Mission San Juan Bautista in San
Juan Bautista, California. Musical directors of the Festival include Gerhard Samuel
(1963-1968), Richard Williams (1969), Carlos Chávez (1970-1973), Dennis Russell Davies
(1974-1990), John Adams (1991), Marin Alsop (1992-2016), and Cristian Macelaru (2017- ).

Executive Committee, and Festival staff. The collection also includes photographs and video

Processing Information
This collection was processed by Kate Dundon in 2019-2020 with assistance from student
assistants Klytie Xu and Michael Conlee. Original order of paper files was retained where
possible. Many folders and folder labels are original to the creator. Special Collections
staff transferred the digital portion of the collection from the Festival office server and
98 CDs and 13 DVDs (carrier media). The carrier media were not retained in the physical
collection. Special Collections staff interfiled content from the Festival's server and
carrier media into one file directory. Digital file names are original to the creator. Some
digital audiovisual files were selectively reformatted for easier access. Dates of digital
audio and video files were altered due to technology used to transfer files and do not
reflect their original creation date. Selected audio tapes of Festival performances from
1977-2003 were digitized in 2017 and 2019 with grant funding support from the Council on
Library and Information Resources.

2002-2019
Physical Description: 78.68
GB 673 digital files
Conditions Governing Access
Digital files are available in the UCSC Special Collections and Archives reading
room. Some files may require reformatting before they can be accessed. Technical
limitations may hinder the Library's ability to provide access to some digital files.
Access to digital files on original carriers is prohibited; users must request to view
access copies. Contact Special Collections and Archives in advance to request access
to audiovisual media and digital files.
Scope and Contents
File formats include .aif, .wav, and .mp3.
Processing Information
Digital audio files from 2002-2012 seasons, and some files from 2013-2014 were
originally stored on CDs and DVDs. Special Collections staff designated these files
with a unique identifier (such as ms0064_med_0001), which corresponds to the original
carrier media. Special Collections staff interfiled files from carrier media and files
from the Festival office server into a single file directory.
