    Date from printed leaf accompanying album, housed in pocket on inside back cover, containing stock numbers and titles of the 16 photographs: Caption title reads: "Sixteen permanent photographs of the Diamond Jubilee Naval Review, at Spithead, June 26th, 1897.... Photographs by West & Son."

    Photographs are mounted to rectos of leaves of heavy white cardstock; photos signed in negative in lower left by photographer "G. West & Son, Southsea," in lower right by photographic retailer and manufacturer, "Marion & Co. London," with caption identifying ships in center, including photographic stock number.

    Bound in royal blue cloth and dark blue leather spine and corners; gold-stamped cover and spine title "Naval review photos;" blue marbled endpapers; all edges gilt; dark blue silk bookmark.

    Spec. Coll. copy: armorial bookplate of Sir David Salomons Bart., Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells on front pastedown. In modern beige cloth clamshell box, with box label "West & Son. 1987 [i.e. 1897] Royal Navy review."

    Biography/History

    Marine and portrait photography studio, established at 97 High Street in Gosport, England in the 1850s by George West and his son, George Edmund James West. Many of the West children were involved in the photography business, which in 1885 relocated to Southsea, England. Another son, Alfred John West, was a celebrated marine photographer, active from the 1880s to 1900, as well as a film pioneer, whose films, "Our Navy," some of the earliest in Great Britain, were shown to Queen Victoria in 1898, and to King Edward VII in 1901

    Scope and Content

    The album includes photographs of the royal yacht, "Victoria and Albert," as well as foreign men-of-war from Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, USA, Russia, France, and Netherlands; battleships, mercantile cruisers, despatch boats, and destroyers, assembled off the south coast of England near the naval base at Portsmouth.
