Abstract: Lesbian Visibility Week is a week-long event devoted to raising awareness of lesbian issues and identities, and raising and celebrating the profile of the lesbian community. It is a combination of cultural programming, workshops addressing current and impending needs, awards ceremonies, and social events. It is co-sponsored by the West Hollywood Lesbian Visibility Committee and the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center and is funded in part by the city of West Hollywood. This collection contains materials pertaining to the planning and execution of Lesbian Visibility Week in West Hollywood, California for the years 1990 through 1992.

The June L. Mazer Lesbian Archive  at UCLA is an outreach and collection-building partnership between the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives , the UCLA Center for the Study of Women (CSW)  and the UCLA Library . These collections expand the pool of primary source materials available to researchers and to the community at large. This partnership was initiated by CSW and is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to inventory, organize, preserve, and digitize more than eighty Mazer collections pertaining to lesbian and feminist activism and writings.

Biography

Lesbian Visibility Week is a week-long event devoted to raising awareness around lesbian issues and identities, raising the profile of the lesbian community and celebrating. It is a combination of cultural programming, workshops addressing current and impending needs, awards ceremonies and social events. It is cosponsored by the Lesbian Visibility Committee and the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center and is funded in part by the city of West Hollywood. The West Hollywood Lesbian Visibility Committee (WeHo LVC) was established in 1989 to bring awareness to lesbians living and loving in West Hollywood, California, one of the largest lesbian communities in America. WeHo LVC endeavors to bring justice where injustices are being carried out in the lesbian community and to act as a resource for women in need.

Scope and Content

This collection includes correspondence, notes, promotional materials, display boards, and photographs all centered on the planning and execution of Lesbian Visibility Week in West Hollywood, California. The collection is dominated by materials from 1990 although Lesbian Visibility Week continued to have a strong presence throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
