Biography
Hayden V. White (1928-2018) was a literary critic and historical theorist. During his
academic career, White made contributions to the study of narrative theory, historiography,
and hermeneutics. A central thread of White's research throughout his career was questioning
how historical events are constructed through writing and discourse. As a teacher and
researcher, White held the distinguished title of University Professor in the University of
California system, where he spent most of his career at the University of California, Santa
Cruz. He also taught at the University of Rochester, Wesleyan University, University of
California Los Angeles, University of California Berkeley, and Stanford University.
White was born July 12, 1928 in Martin, Tennessee. His family moved to Detroit in the early
1930s, during the Great Depression. Near the end of World War II, White enlisted in the Navy
and served as a pilot. He then attended Wayne State University (then Wayne University) on
the GI Bill, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1951 before pursuing
graduate studies in the same subject at the University of Michigan and earning an M.A. in
1952, with a focus in medieval history. He would complete his doctoral dissertation in 1955,
after spending two years in Rome on a Fulbright Fellowship. His thesis, heavily influenced
by the sociological concepts and methodology of Max Weber, was on the institutional and
ideological causes of the papal schism of 1130.
White started his professional career at Wayne State University in 1955, and then moved to
the University of Rochester in 1958. In 1968, he began teaching at the University of
California, Los Angeles, where he remained for seven years. At Wesleyan University in
Connecticut, he was the Director of the Center for the Humanities from 1973 to 1976. In
1978, White started as a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he was
instrumental in the development of the History of Consciousness program. He was named
Presidential Professor in 1985 and University Professor in 1990. After officially retiring
from the History of Consciousness department in 1996 (but remaining for advising and some
teaching duties thereafter), he taught Rhetoric at the University of California Berkeley
from 1996-1997 and Comparative Literature at Stanford University from 1996 to 2008.
Throughout his career, White traveled extensively, and was a Visiting Professor in Italy,
Germany, France, Poland, China, and Japan.
In 1972, while a history professor at UCLA, White sued the Los Angeles Chief of Police
Edward Davis for spending public funds in covert intelligence gathering on college campuses
by LAPD police offers. White reported that police officers were registering undercover as
UCLA students, attending classes, joining student organizations, and subsequently making
reports to the police department about discussions happening in classes and organization
meetings. This case,
White v. Davis, went to the California Supreme Court in
1975, where the court ruled unanimously in White's favor.
White v. Davis set
a precedent which established that police cannot engage in surveillance of political
activity without reasonable suspicion of a crime.
White's major published works include
Metahistory: The Historical Imagination in
Nineteenth-Century Europe
(1973);
Tropics of Discourse (1979);
The Content of the Form: Narrative Discourse and Historical Representation,
which contains "The Value of Narrativity in the Representation of Reality," (1987);
Figural Realism: Studies in the Mimesis Effect (1999);
The Fiction
of Narrative: Essays on History, Literature, and Theory, 1957–2007
(2010); and
The Practical Past (2014). He was elected Fellow of the American Academy of
Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, and received honorary doctorates
(Doctor of Humane Letters) from several institutions including the University of Michigan,
Wesleyan University, North Carolina State University, the University of Bucharest, Gdansk
University in Poland, and the Freie Universität of Berlin.
Hayden White passed away at the age of 89 on March 5, 2018 in Santa Cruz, California.

Content Description
The Hayden V. White papers document White's professional, teaching, and research career
from the 1950s to 2017. A significant portion of the collection contains White's research
files, which include his notes and writings, correspondence, and collected files on various
topics, authors and research themes. A small amount of White's undergraduate and graduate
work is included in the research files. The correspondence series contains letters and other
materials that were not filed with research files, and mainly contains conference
invitations, publication and review requests, communications with colleagues at UC Santa
Cruz regarding the History of Consciousness department, other professional communications,
documentation on the
White v. Davis legal case, and some personal
correspondence. Writings and publications include both typed and handwritten notes,
manuscripts, and annotated drafts of many of his works, as well as offprints of selected
published works. Teaching files include course notes, lecture notes and planning documents,
and some lecture audio recordings. White was professionally active in conferences and was
invited to speak on many occasions, the preparation and products of which are present in
this collection. Digital files include research files, talks, and writings from the
mid-1990s to the 2010s.

Processing Information
Paper materials processed by Christian Alvarado in the Center for Archival Research and
Training (CART) with assistance from Alix Norton, 2019. Nearly all titles in this collection
were derived from the original folder titles as received from the donor. Original folders
were used when they were deemed to be serviceable, in order to retain notes that White had
written on the folders.
Digital materials processed by Patrick King in the Center for Archival Research and
Training (CART), under the direction of Kate Dundon and Alix Norton, 2019. Digital files
were transferred from carrier disks and hard drives in 2019. Some files were not able to be
transferred from the carrier disks due to technical constraints. Duplicate files, personnel
records, and other out of scope files were not retained. Files were not reformatted, and
file names are original to the creator. Original disks were retained and are included in the
collection.

Digital Files
1992-2017
Physical Description: 40.7
GB 34,270 digital files
Conditions Governing Access
Digital files are available in the UCSC Special Collections and Archives reading room.
Some files may require reformatting before they can be accessed. Technical limitations
may hinder the Library's ability to provide access to some digital files. Access to
digital files on original carriers is prohibited; users must request to view access
copies. Contact Special Collections and Archives in advance to request access to digital
files.
Organization and Arrangement
The series originates from three sources: Disks (files from portable disks), MacBook
Pro (files from White's personal laptop computer), and Humanities (files from White's
Humanities desktop computer). Original order of the digital material, including file
names and folder arrangement, has been retained without intervention by archives
staff.
Additional Collection Guides
For a complete inventory of the contents of Series 7: Digital Files, see the following
guide:
To access redacted versions of the email messages in this collection, see the ePADD
Discovery site:
Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Access to the born digital materials of the Hayden White Papers is available on-site in
the UCSC Special Collections & Archives reading room. The software application
QuickView Plus is recommended for reading and viewing, and is provided for use in the
reading room. Note that some files stored may be inaccessible due to obsolete formats,
lack of required software, or file degradation.
Processing Information
The digital materials in this collection were processed by Patrick King, Kate Dundon,
and Alix Norton in 2019. Digital files were transferred from carrier disks in 2019
including 46 3.5-inch floppy disks, two ZIP disks, 15 CDs, one 2TB external hard drive,
one 500GB external hard drive, and one iMac Aluminum desktop computer. Files on the
500GB hard drive and iMac computer were found to be have duplicated files in the Time
Machine backups on the 2TB hard drive; only the files on the 2TB drive containing
backups from the two computers were transferred.
DataAccessioner v1.1 was used to capture digital files from carrier disks. Tools used
in the analysis of files included DROID and TreeSize Pro to identify duplicate files and
calculate file sizes, Bulk Extractor and manual file review to locate personal
identifying information, ePADD to review email, and Karen's Directory Printer to create
a file directory PDF.
Files including personal identifiable information were deleted, in accordance with UCSC
Special Collections & Archives privacy policy. These include financial information;
medical, student, employment, and legal records; and other private files. Duplicate
files over 5 MB; system and temporary files; internet browsing files; application files;
drivers and software installers; and files created by the Macintosh computing
environment (e.g. thumbs.db, .DS_Store) were removed. CDs and DVDs with out-of-scope
content (e.g., readily available films and music) were not transferred. A number of
floppy disks were not able to be transferred due to technological constraints. Original
disks were retained and are included in the collection, with the exception of the hard
drive containing the Time Machine backups from White's two personal computers.
Processor
Digital materials processed by Patrick King in 2019 in the Center for Archival Research
and Training (CART), under the direction of Kate Dundon and Alix Norton.
Scope and Contents
This series includes the contents of White's Macintosh hard drives and portable disks
(e.g. floppy disks, CDs, ZIP disks). It contains writing and publications; research
files; syllabi and teaching files; conference and lecture activities; photographic
material related to family, travel, and academic events; and email correspondence, both
personal and professional.
Materials related to White's writing and research include numerous drafts and finished
versions of articles, reviews, and talks between 1992 and 2017, some of which would end
up in three published collections,
Figural Realism (1999),
The
Fiction of Narrative
(2010), and
The Practical Past (2014). The
topics covered in the digital files span historical theory, historical temporality,
intellectual history, and the practice of history writing; modernism, postmodernism,
utopia, nationalism, literary criticism, aesthetics, and narratology; Holocaust studies,
trauma theory, and witness literature.
Across both the digital files and email correspondence there can also be found
dialogues and debates that White had with other scholars; publishers' proofs and
editorial conversations related to book manuscripts and peer-review journals; and
communications about events, research programs, summer institutes, and academic seminars
connected with universities in North America, Europe, South America, and Asia.
White's research notes comprise .pdf files of texts on specific topics or related to
particular authors as well as articles downloaded directly from web browsers. A typical
example includes his materials on the Enlightenment, which resulted in the paper "The
Limits of Enlightenment: Enlightenment as Metaphor and Concept."
A portion of the files concern translations of White's previous work into other
languages, prefaces drafted for those translations or re-publications, and forewords he
was asked to write for titles by other authors.
Photographs in the digital files mainly correspond to White's travels to conferences
and historical sites around the world, as well as personal and family gatherings. Many
photographs are informal portraits of friends, family, and colleagues, and White
himself, and some show architectural features of historical sites he visited.
File formats in the digital files include Microsoft Word document files (.doc), Portal
Document Format files (.pdf), Microsoft PowerPoint files (.ppt), Chrome HTML files
(.html), Rich Text Format files (.rtf), email files (.emlx), and various graphics
formats (.tiff; .png; .jpeg; .gif). The most represented file types in the digital
materials are graphics (.tiff, .jpg, .gif. Etc. - 88%), followed by Microsoft Office
files (mostly .doc and .docx - 4%) and video (2.4%) and audio (2.3%).
These digital materials were transferred from three main components of White's digital
computing environment: portable disks such as 3.5" floppy disks, ZIP disks, and CDs;
White's Humanities computer, which was a Macintosh desktop personal computer that he
used on the UC Santa Cruz campus; and White's MacBook Pro laptop, which he used on
campus and at his home.
Disks
The files from portable disks were created between approximately 1992 and 2017, and
contain word processor files (file type is generically labeled "File," written on Mac
5), many essays that would end up in the 2000 collection
Figural Realism
(the manuscript for that work is contained here); some work on modernism surrounding
Stein, Baudelaire/Mallarme; and work on historiography, catastrophe, memory, utopia,
identity. Numerous lectures and papers that he gave at conferences are included, which
are often labeled by location or venue. Most of the academic work from the 1990s and
2000s represented on these disks are from invited lectures and publications, as well as
research projects in which he was involved. The material from the 2000s include some
material on the restructuring of the Humanities division at UC Santa Cruz, but not much
information on other university happenings or teaching files, as White was splitting his
time between Italy and the United States for much of the 1990s and 2000s.
Humanities desktop computer
The Humanities computer component of files was created between approximately the late
2000s to 2015. Between the two components of files from White's computers, the
Humanities desktop contains the vast majority: 88% of files are on the Humanities
computer, and 12% of files are on White's personal MacBook Pro laptop. Included in this
component of files are a final draft of White's 2014 publication
The Practical
Past
and research files on the Holocaust, the Enlightenment ("Modernity",
Enlightenment project), and Primo Levi/Exile. Many PDF files that White utilized for
research purposes are included in this component, as well as multiple interviews and a
memorial piece on Frank Kermode.
MacBook Pro laptop computer
The MacBook Pro laptop computer component of files was created between approximately
2005 and 2015. The topic of the Holocaust is well represented in this component. Also
included are White's responses to criticism, material related to talks that White gave,
and a PowerPoint file on Dante that may have been used as a teaching file. Of particular
interest are Judith Butler's notes on the "Truth and Circumstance" chapter in White's
The Practical Past; drafts of a paper on historical discourse and
literary theory from a conference in Jena, Germany in 2011; and drafts and notes on
White's later essays which were perhaps included in
The Fiction of
Narrative
,
The Historical Imagination collections, and/or
The Practical Past (in folders titled "New Book" and "PP").
