Historical Note
Founded in 1919, the Sacramento Tuberculosis Association was dedicated to eradicating the communicable lung disease by educating
Sacramentans about its spread and assisting patients through the process of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. The
Association employed public health nurses at a clinic for those without primary care physicians located at 918½ Sixth Street.
And in 1926, the association opened the Sun Mount Preventorium in Colfax for children whose parents suffered from tuberculosis.
Most of the association's work in testing and rehabilitation was carried out in cooperation with the city health department
and the Weimar Sanatorium, and the group also worked closely with local clubs and schools, who hosted their regular talks
and film screenings. In 1962, the group became the Sacramento Tuberculosis and Health Association, and it was renamed the
Sacramento Lung Association in 1973.
