    Biographical / Historical

The Veyga Family (also spelled de Veiga) was a Spanish-Cuban family that emigrated from La Coruna, Spain, to Cuba and later to Argentina during the 19th century. Tomas de Veyga married Antonio Perez in 1833 and had a son, Juan de Veyga (born circa. 1837 in Havana, Cuba), who married Serafina Martínez Arenales in 1864. Serafina was the daughter of Francisco Martínez de la Rosa (1788-1860). Juan and Serafina's son Dr. Francisco de Veyga (1866-1948) married Margarita Peró (1870-1952).

    Scope and Contents

This collection chiefly contains correspondence and legal documents, in Spanish, of the Veyga family (also spelled Veiga) and related family members in Cuba and later Argentina, dating from the late-18th to the late-19th centuries. Materials primarily reflect three generations of the Veyga family: Tomas de Veyga, Juan de Veyga (born ca. 1837), and Doctor Francisco de Veyga (1866-1948), as well as Juan de Veyga's father-in-law Francisco Martínez de la Rosa (1788-1860). The bulk of the collection is held in a volume of bound documents with the handwritten title: "Archivo de Dn. Juan de Veyga 1871." The volume chiefly contains legal, business, political, and governmental documents of multiple generations dating from 1773 to 1871. There are also some pieces of ephemera, pamphlets, hand-drawn coats of arms, and passports in the volume. In addition, the collection includes correspondence, clippings, and documents of Dr. Francisco de Veyga, primarily reflecting his involvement with the Cuban Independence Movement in the 1890s, including international diplomatic work.
