    Abstract: This collection contains materials related to the Butcher and Search families, created and gathered by Harriet Butcher Ara Bia, particularly of their travels in Europe, and their time spent in Carmel, California. Her parents were William C. Butcher and Marietta Butcher. She was the niece of Preston W. Search, an educator and lecturer, and cousin of Frederick Preston Search, famed cellist. The collection consists of 5 photograph albums, 1 folder of paper materials and 1 box of organizational ribbons and pins.

    Biography/Administrative History

    Harriet Butcher Ara Bia went to Sunset School and later the University of California, Berkeley. Her parents were William C. Butcher and Marietta Search Butcher. She was the niece of Preston W. Search, an educator and lecturer, and cousin of Frederick Preston Search, famed cellist. The Butcher and Search families spent a great deal of time together. In 1949 Harriet married Antone Ara Bia. They built a house in Carmel in 1950 with the help of the community, and until it was completed lived in a tent. Harriet died in 1987.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    This collection is made up of 5 photo albums; 4 containing photographs of Carmel, “Casa de Rosas,” Big Sur, the Butcher and Search families, various pictures of Europe (Italy, Germany and Switzerland), and 1 album made up reproductions of various chateaus around Chantilly, France. There is 1 folder of few loose photographs of the Search and Butcher families, and 1 folder of paper materials. There is also a set of 36 ribbons and pins for various organizations and conventions in Ohio, belonging to Harriet’s mother, Marietta Search Butcher.
