Scope and Content

South America, West Indies, 1938-39. Album of photographs from the pre-war voyage of German battleship SMS Schleswig-Holstein to the West Indies and South America before returning to Germany and firing the first shots of the Second World War. Inscribed by photographer and compiler, young German sea cadet O. Renner. Contains 390 black- and-white-photographs, some captioned in manuscript. Also with two maps of the voyage, one showing the entire tract, one highlighting the Caribbean route, and a photograph of the official travel orders. There is also a snapshot of Adolf Hitler and Hungarian Admiral and Regent of the Kingdom of Hungary, Miklós Horthy de Nagybánya. Additional photos appear to be of Spain and Portugal.
