The materials were donated to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in 1990 by the collector.
Historical or Biographical Note
Gordon H. Fountain was a member of the Friends of the Ship Balclutha, a group responsible for the 1955 restoration of the
Balclutha. Fountain collected newspaper clippings and ephemera about the ship's voyages, restoration, rechristening, and status
as a museum along with some additional items on San Francisco waterfront and west coast museum ships.
Collection Scope and Content
The Gordon H. Fountain photograph collection (P90-072, SAFR 24435) consists of two photograph album pages and photograph souvenir
of the bark Star of India collected by Gordon H. Fountain, a member of the Friends of the Ship Balclutha.
The photograph album pages appear to be related to the Haviside Company of San Francisco, Calif. and include four black-and-white
photographic prints of vessels at dock with Haviside cranes and equipment including one photograph of Haviside, Withers &
Davis / Ship Chandlers, Sail Makers and Ship Riggers trucks parked alongside a freighter at dock with a dog and man on top
of the supplies. The collection also includes a souvenir 'Pictorial story of the Bark--Star of India, San Diego, California'
with selected photographs published by Kalands, Sand Diego, Calif. consisting of nine 2.5 x 3.5 in. accordian folded and perforated
attached black-and-white photographic prints.
