    Scope and Content of Collection

This collection contains materials related to the San Francisco Lesbian and Gay History Project, which worked to uncover and make public the history of lesbian and gay communities. The organization, which began as a loosely knit study group in 1978, produced one of the first lesbian and gay history slide shows, “She Even Chewed Tobacco.” The collection includes project and grant proposals, publicity, sign in sheets and organizational records, early slide shows, notes, and materials from the Project’s Lesbian History Group. There are also 5 boxes of audiotapes from approximately 1979 to 1988; these include recordings of meetings, book reviews, conference papers and reports, discussions of historical topics and methodologies, lectures, readings, and slide shows. All of the tapes have been digitized and the files are available upon request. Participants include local and visiting scholars as well as Project members. Members of the Project were instrumental in founding the San Francisco Bay Area Gay and Lesbian Historical Society (later GLBT Historical Society).
