Abstract: The collection consists of notes, guidebooks, prints, and photographs created and collected by Josephine Locke on her travels
in Europe and the Far East. In addition to notebooks filled with Locke's observations on the art she viewed, many of the prints
include handwritten annotations. Also included is a signed photograph of Rabindranath Tagore. Josephine Locke (1851-1919)
was an artist, author, and lecturer in Los Angeles, where she was an active member of the Ruskin Art Club. Ms. Locke worked
as supervisor of art in the Chicago public schools befoe settling in Los Angeles. She lectured on art and religion in Florence
and Paris, and traveled in Africa and Asia, where she developed a strong interest in Japanese art and culture.
