Scope and Content

The album opens with photographs by the studio of James Valentine and Sons of Dundee, Scotland ("J.V."; Valentine's son William Dobson Valentine was also a photographer with the firm at that time), and G.W. Wilson & Co. ("G.W.W.") of the towns, harbors, castles, and countryside of Scotland, west of Aberdeen. Photos of The Trossachs, with captions referencing Sir Walter Scott's Lady of the Lake, suggest that the album belonged to someone with literary tastes. Included are views of Loch Katrine, Loch Achray, and Ben Venue, and the nearby town of Ballater, and the scene of the Massacre of Glencoe. In the Scottish Highlands, there are photos of Corpach, and the locks of the Caledonian Canal; in the Shetland Islands, there are views of a Shetland pony standing with his owner in Commercial Street in Lerwick, and a panorama of the town and harbor from the 17th-century Fort Charlotte; in the Outer Hebrides, we see the druidical stones at Callanish. An interesting view of Abergeldie Castle on the River Dee displays a rope strung across the river, possibly for operation of a ferry boat. Castles are a theme throughout the album, which contains photos of Balmoral, Abergeldie, Edinburgh, Hastings, Glengarry (on Loch Ness), Stirling, Dunster, and Windsor Castles. The lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and rocky mountains of Scotland are another subject of many of the photographs, with particular emphasis on landscapes and country homes of Surrey at Leith Hill, Box Hill, Hindhead, Dorking, Wotton (home of John Evelyn), Deepdene, and Milton Court--and Devon--Lynton, Bideford, Ilfracombe, the River Tamar in Morwellham, Dartmoor. There is a fine architectural photo of Lord Tennyson's home, Aldworth, on Black Down in Sussex. The album also contains 18 reproductions or photographs of artworks, several by J.M.W. Turner from his Liber studiorum. Others are portraits, after artists such as Sir Joshua Reynolds, Gainsborough, and Federico Zuccaro; there is also a portrait of Mary Magdalen by Guido Reni, and one of Lord Nelson after John Hoppner, from the painting at Greenwich Hospital.
