Biographical / Historical
Homa Sarshar (1946-) was born in Shiraz, Iran in to a Jewish family and was raised in Tehran. She studied French literature
in Tehran University and later she obtained a MA in journalism from the Annenberg School of Communications, University of
Southern California and a Ph.D. (HC) in Journalism from College of Letters and Science at the American World University in
Los Angeles, CA. She is an Iranian-American author, activist, feminist and journalist. She was a columnist for Zan-e-Ruz magazine
and Kayhan daily newspaper between 1964 and 1978. She moved to United States and settled in Los Angeles one year before the
Iranian Revolution in 1978. Since 1993 Sarshar has been a trusted adviser by the Human Rights Watch. She has received numerous
awards for her work, including the Medal for Special Achievement in Women's Rights, given by The Iranian Women's Organization
of Tehran, Iran; Journalism Award: Distinguished Iranian Women by the Encyclopædia Iranica; Commendation for Community Affairs
Services by the County of Los Angeles; and the 2013 Ellis Island Medal of Honor. [Wikipedia]

Scope and Contents
The collection includes audiovisual materials, such as documentaries; recordings from the first Iranian organization luncheons
(Anjoman-e Iranian); Iranian women's conferences (including Iranian Women's Studies Foundation); audio/video recordings of
CIRA & MESA conferences; audio recording of a seminar on Persian literature taught by the late Nader Naderpour at UCLA, as
well as other University events; radio and TV shows. Also included are images, fliers, booklets, awards, medals and correspondence
with well-known Iranian artists and writers.

While Special Collections is the owner of the physical and digital items, permission to examine collection materials is not
an authorization to publish. These materials are made available for use in research, teaching, and private study. Any transmission
or reproduction beyond that allowed by fair use requires permission from the owners of rights, heir(s) or assigns.
